Blog Post 3: Establish Criteria to Evaluate Science Paper

-I think that one of the first types of criteria that an individual should look for that makes a research paper accurate is whether or not the information being presented is current. For example the information that is being presented in the paper might not be relevant for today's current statues.

-Does the paper have good credentials? What I mean by this is, does the paper being present contain scholarly work from other sources and not just their own sources to support its claim.

-Can what is being described or experimented on in the paper be reproduced? Is this a one time event in history that has caused a change in the future or something that can be proven through either scientific data or factual information.

-The reader should be able to draw logical lines on how the information being presented relates to one another. Can I get from point A to point B without making any assumptions?

-Another piece of information that the reader should take into account is whether the paper is uniform throughout. What I mean is does the paper contain consistent information throughout the entire paper or is it just a hodgepodge of information.

Class Criteria
1. References/Sources is the information provided credible? Do not argue whether or not Global Warming is true or not. Also the Publisher.
2. Science methods valid/accuracy/repeatability/data analysis
3. Open Perspective non-bias approach (science method not really data)
4. Is the paper legitimate now

15 minute presentation time

Blog Post 2: Presentation on Penny Weights

Post on your blog your group presentation related to the questions on masses posed in class:
What would a penny weigh picked up from the sidewalk?
What would a 1908 penny weigh?
What would a 1793 penny weigh?
Also, post a reflection on your presentation, the other presentations, and thoughts on how these could be even better.

Our group researched the topic and came up with a powerpoint presentaion with the information on it. We found it hard to give a 10 min presentation on just 3 really simple questions. However, we should have spent more time using our science skills in determining the last question and less time using our reseach skills. Like you mentioned in class our group should have actually went outside the cafe and made an attemt to find some pennies on the side walk. Anyways after we did a quick google search we were able to quickly dertermine that penny weight depends on what year it was made. For instance, indianhead pennies made between the years of 1864 and 1909 wieghed 3.11 grams. So would would a penny weigh that was made in 1908 weigh? The answer in 3.11 grams. A penny made in 1793 would weigh in at 13.48 grams and be made entirely of copper. I thought that as a class we could have put together better presentations. We needed to use more scientific findings.

Blog Post 1: PDP Ideas

Question- Post on your blog the important items that should be covered in a professional development plan for this course?

Purpose- Here is where you would put the reason for creating a plan in the first place. You can create a PDP for a variety of topics such as a class that you are taking or maybe a job that you which to someday have. Whatever the reason people can utilize PDPs to keep in check with how things are going.

Values- This is a place where you can list what you values mean the most to you. Your values might change over time or overlap depending on what you are creating the PDP for, but this is a good place to start listing the things that are meaningful to you.

Goals- Here is a place to write down some goals that you wish to accomplish either in the near future or distant future. They should pertain to the purpose of writing the PDP.

Achievements- Here is a place where one can list and describe the achievements that they have had in the past or ones that they wish to acquire.

Milestones- Is a place where you could list major turning points in your life. Here you are given a chance to elaborate on notable changes that you have experienced during your lifetime.

Dreams- List your perfect scenario for the PDP you are creating. For example, if you are taking a really hard class that you know for a fact you will not be able to get a grade better than a B make it your dream to receive an A.

  • Purpose/Mission- I intend on becoming a Physical Therapist by the age of 25.
  • Short Term Goals- Attend a Student Affairs Conference in Wisconsin Dells on October 21 and 22 in order to learn new innovative ways on how to secure a Graduate Assistantship with the school I hopefully get accepted to for Physical Therapy. Also to attend the Oshkosh Placement Exchange conference this year on March 1st-4th in order to set up some interviews with potential employers for the grad internship.
  •  1 year time- I plan to be in Graduate school either at the University of New England in Maine or University Glendale in Arizona. Along with that I hope to acquire a grad assistantship with the school that I get accepted too.
  • How to do that- Already took the G.R.E and applied to these schools, however getting an "A" in all my classes this semester would help. Attending more Conferences like the one in the Dells. Make contact with a couple of important people.
  • Back-up Plan- If I do not get accepted to a school this year I will be looking for other jobs.
  • Skills I posses- I have great communication and leadership skills that I have acquired over the years of being a Resident Advisor and Assistant Athletic Trainer here at Stout.
